The Archetype Room
Follow along while we teach. Fill in what you can, leave blanks where you are lost, and bring the blanks to the next meeting. Your answers save automatically to this device and are never sent anywhere.
Three pieces of information cast a chart. The third one is the one people forget, and it is the one that sets your Rising sign and your entire house structure.
No birth time on record? You can still work tonight. We cast what is called a solar chart, read the planets and aspects, and leave the houses provisional until a time surfaces.
Astrology is the study of correspondence between the positions of the planets and the patterns of human experience. It is a symbolic language, and a chart is a sentence written in it.
It is
- A language, where each symbol carries a family of related meanings
- A map of the sky over your exact birth moment and place
- A mirror that gives names to patterns already running in you
It is not
- Fate, or a script you are required to perform
- Fortune telling. Prediction here means timing, not endings
- Twelve personality boxes. Your Sun is one of roughly forty parts
- A replacement for therapy, medicine, or good friends
Tropical zodiac. The signs are measured from the spring equinox, so they track the seasons rather than the visible constellations. Zero degrees Aries is the equinox point itself.
Geocentric view. The chart is drawn from where you stood on Earth. This is why birth city matters, and why retrograde motion is part of the language.
Psychological lineage. Modern Western practice absorbed depth psychology, which is why we can speak of the planets as archetypes at all.
For contrast: Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, measured against the fixed stars. Chinese astrology is a separate system built on years, animals, and elements. Different systems, different questions, all internally consistent.
Planet + Sign + House + Aspect
The what. Which drive is speaking. This is the archetype.
The how. The style and temperament it speaks in.
The where. The area of life where it shows up.
The with whom. How it negotiates with the rest of you.
If you take one thing home tonight, take this line. Every interpretation you will ever read is an expansion of it.
Archetype: a universal pattern of human experience that repeats across myth, story, and psyche. A planet is not a rock acting on you from space. It is the name of a function already running inside you.
As we go through each one, write the first person in your life, or the first moment of your own, that the description brings to mind.
The twelve signs are twelve styles
Element is the raw material. Fire acts, Earth builds, Air connects, Water feels.
Modality is the timing. Cardinal starts, Fixed sustains, Mutable adapts.
The twelve houses are twelve rooms
Signs are style. Houses are location. This is where the archetype meets your Tuesday.
Your Rising sign and the four angles
Ascendant, or Rising sign: the sign coming over the eastern horizon at your birth moment. It sets the cusp of the first house and rotates the entire house system into place.
The doorway. How you meet the world and how it first meets you.
The root. Home, ancestry, the private ground you stand on.
The other. Partnership, and what you meet through relationship.
The peak. Vocation, reputation, the direction you are publicly aimed.
The Midheaven is abbreviated MC, from the Latin medium coeli. It gets a full night of its own later in the series.
Aspect: a significant angular distance between two planets, describing the working relationship between those two parts of you.
Hard aspects are not bad aspects. Squares build muscle. Trines can go unused for a lifetime.
Sun for purpose, Moon for need, Rising for approach. Fill in the sign, then write the archetype in your own words rather than copying a paragraph written for strangers.
This is the training wheel that becomes the bicycle. Choose three pieces and read the result out loud.
Choose a planet, a sign, and a house.
Example. Mars in Libra in the tenth house: my inner Warrior fights by negotiating and refusing to be rushed, and it shows up most in my career and public standing.
Being stuck is rarely a missing quality. Usually one archetype has nowhere legitimate to go. It shows up three ways.
Denied
You refuse the function. Mars gets called rude, so anger goes underground and returns as exhaustion or resentment.
Over run
One archetype runs the whole show. Saturn takes every decision and life becomes correct, safe, and airless.
Projected
You only see it in other people. You are drawn to and infuriated by the exact trait you have not claimed.
Natal chart. The map of the sky for your exact birth moment and location.
Tropical zodiac. The Western sign system measured from the spring equinox.
Sidereal zodiac. The sign system measured against the fixed stars, used in Vedic astrology.
Ascendant. The Rising sign, on the eastern horizon at birth, cusp of the first house.
Midheaven, MC. The cusp of the tenth house, the vocational and public peak of the chart.
Cusp. The starting boundary of a house.
Aspect. A significant angle between two planets describing how they interact.
Orb. The allowed margin of degrees around an exact aspect.
Transit. A planet's current position making contact with your natal chart.
Archetype. A universal pattern of human experience that a planet names.
Solar chart. A chart cast without a birth time, read for planets and aspects.
Retrograde. The apparent backward motion of a planet from our view on Earth.

What we actually study
Astrology is bigger than sun signs. Here's the territory we cover in classes, labs and meetups.
The Chart Itself
Planets, signs, houses and the angles between them. How the pieces fit, and what happens when they argue.
Timing
Transits, progressions, solar returns and profections — how a chart moves, and why certain years feel the way they do.
Relationships
Synastry and composite work. What draws two charts together, and what quietly wears at them.
Asteroids
Ceres, Pallas, Juno, Vesta, Chiron and the named asteroids most readings never mention. One of our deeper specialities.
Traditional & Hellenistic
Whole sign houses, sect, lots and Arabic parts, time lords. Where modern astrology came from.
Astrocartography
Your chart mapped across the world. Which places activate which parts of you, and why some cities just feel different.
And the neighbouring systems
Different languages describing the same person. Each has its own study track here.
Free to use, right now
